The Pacific Foundation for Medical
Care offers provider networks and other medical services to health
plans and self-insured employers. Founded in Sonoma County in 1957,
PFMC has since grown to encompass 27 counties throughout California
(see service area map). The organization
is governed by a board of trustees composed
of physicians from PFMC's service area.
PFMC’s mission is to improve patient access to physicians.
We fulfill this mission by:
- Developing and offering
broad provider networks.
- Negotiating equitable
fee-for-service reimbursement for health care services.
- Promoting affordable,
quality health care and patient freedom of choice.
- Offering in-specialty
physician review of medical claims.
- Awarding grants
to nonprofit health care organizations.
PFMC is affiliated with several other
organizations. Redwood Health Services (RHS),
our commercial subsidiary, handles claims processing and administrative
functions for health plans. Basic Plus is
an innovative and affordable health plan that RHS began offering
in 2002. It combines low rates with unlimited access to our provider
network. RHS
Communications is a full-service creative agency that develops
ads, websites, and related materials for the medical community.
In addition to its business activities, PFMC awards grants to projects
that enhance health services. The Grants and Awards Committee meets
twice a year to screen grant applications. The committee’s recommendations
are then presented to the board of directors for final approval.
